Storm Response & Initial Support

Following the Auckland Anniversary and Cyclone Gabrielle storms, members of both Weir and AOS have supported multiple maintenance contractors working across the Auckland Transport (AT) network to remediate damaged sites affecting publicly owned assets, including road embankments, culverts and public walkways.

Upon completing the initial risk assessments and recovery works, our water infrastructure specialists worked alongside several lead contractors, including the Liveable Streets Joint Venture, to deliver more detailed evaluations and longer-term design solutions for construction across Auckland.

This included working alongside AOS’s geotechnical specialists to scope and complete site-specific investigations (such as geotechnical investigations, topographical surveys, and hydrological and hydraulic analyses) of sites subjected to flooding, slips, culvert failures, or scour damage.

Site Challenges & Specialist Roles

Sites ranged from landslides to under slips of road embankments to major box culverts that failed due to the extreme flood flows experienced. Our water infrastructure specialists, including James Taylor, Sejal Sangwai and Dr. Chenonn Chin, played key roles in assisting the wider teams in identifying options to improve stormwater management at the failed sites, by way of cost-effective solutions that would add resilience against failure in the event of future flooding.

Emergency Works & Building Back Better

The team quickly responded to failures and prepared detailed designs in a short order to construct emergency works under the RMA. The team adopted a philosophy of ‘build back better’ and identified methods of adding resilience and improving the level of infrastructure service where possible.

This included designing safer overland flow paths to improve public safety during flooding, using scour-resistant materials and adding erosion protection to ensure that, in the future, roads could be brought back into service faster following future flood events.
