Weir was engaged by Quayside Properties Limited (QPL) to undertake a technical review of the design of the Rangiuru Business Park (RBP) Water Supply Network (to be vested in Western Bay of Plenty District Council, WBoPDC). The RBP Water Supply Network comprises:

  • A bulk supply connection to the Te Puke No. 1 Road
  • Reservoir.
  • A reticulation network to supply the RBP.
  • Two new 5,300m3 reservoirs
  • A new booster pump station comprising 6 pumps, boosting pressures in the RBP reticulation network.

The designer’s EPANET model was used to undertake the transient analysis using Bentely Hammer. A total of nine hydraulic models were developed to assess the performance of the pump station under varying demand conditions.

  • Scenario 1 – Maximum Demand (Fire Flow): Represents the worst-case condition, simulating Stage 4 fire flow requirements combined with peak water usage.
  • Scenario 2 – Average Daily Demand (Non-Fire Flow): Reflects typical residential water consumption under non-fire flow conditions.
  • Scenario 3 – Minimum Demand (Low Flow): simulates off-peak periods with reduce water demands, representing low flow conditions.

Each scenario above was also analysed under three distinct pump operating conditions to assess the transient response:

  • Pump Failure – simulates an instantaneous shutdown of all pumps, representing a sudden loss of power or emergency failure.
  • Pump Shutdown – Models a controlled, gradual shutdown of all pumps, reflecting standard operating procedures or planned maintenance.
  • Pump Startup – Simulates the simultaneous startup of all pumps from an idle state.

In general, the design for the RBP Water Supply Network was found to be adequate to supply and meet intended operational demands. However, a significant weak area was identified within the distribution network (due to negative pressures). To address this an air valve was recommended at this location.

Following the initial review, Weir was appointed to provide construction support services to the construction contractor, HEB Construction. This has involved day to day construction support and monitoring services, and post-tender design services which has also involved working alongside WBoPDC’s Development Engineer. Additional services since appointment have also included the development of a Functional Description, P&ID and Commissioning Plan.
