Project Overview
Weir, alongside our sister company AOS, was engaged by HEB Construction Ltd (HEB) to support the design of slope stability improvements and stream works within the Whangapouri Creek as part of the Paerata Culvert Replacement Project for Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters Unit (ACHW) under a Design-and-Build Contract.
Flooding Challenges & Design Response
The project aimed to reduce flooding issues caused by the Paerata Culvert and involved removing the existing undersized culvert and replacing it with a new bridge. However, the proposed bridge would increase flood flows and velocities through the culvert, adding to stream bank shear forces through the downstream reach of Whangapouri Creek.
Engineering Solutions
To address potential adverse effects, slope stability, scour protection, and in-stream mitigation works must also be designed to stabilise the stream banks, reduce stream velocities, and facilitate stream restoration.
Our team of specialist civil engineers, led by Dr Chenonn Chin, provided a range of specialist services spanning hydraulic and hydrological analyses, channel and river morphology assessment and civil engineering design (including the bridge deck and associated tie-ins).
Current Status
The project is under construction, with our team members providing construction observation services.
